David Benjamin Rees (in Welsh)

Mae 2020 wedi bod yn flwyddyn bwysig i D Ben Rees, fel yr adwaenir ef. Bu ei lyfr Hanes Rhyfeddol Cymry Lerpwl ar restr fer Llyfr y Flwyddyn, sydd yn golygu bod y cynnwys yn ddigon diddorol i apelio at Gymry y tu allan i Lannau Mersi yn ogystal ag i ni sydd yn byw yma. Mae’r gyfrol hon yn ffrwyth degawdau o ymchwil i hanes y Cymry oedd yn byw ar Lannau Mersi ac wedi cael ei disgrifio fel trysor o wybodaeth. Brodor o Landdewi Brefi ydyw, ond mae wedi byw y rhan fwyaf o’i oes yn Lerpwl ac yn sicr mae wedi rhoi y ddau le ar y map. Mae wedi ysgrifennu llyfr ar hanes ei bentref genedigol yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg ac ef yw’r awdurdod pennaf ar hanes y Cymry yn Lerpwl.

Ymddiddorodd yn ifanc iawn ym myd cyhoeddi a phan oedd yn y coleg dechreuodd gylchgrawn politicaidd ar y teitl Aneirin, ar ôl ei arwr Aneurin Bevan. Flynyddoedd yn ddiwedarach i ddathlu 70 mlynedd o sefydlu’r Gwasanaeth Iechyd Gwladol (GIG) ysgrifennodd gofiant iddo. Yn fuan ar ôl gadael y coleg a dechrau ar ei swydd fel gweinidog yr efengyl yn Abercynnon, sefydlodd Ben Rees ei wasg ei hun: Cyhoeddiadau Modern Cymreig Cyf. Yn nyddiau cynnar y wasg cyhoeddodd nifer o lyfrau lliwgar i blant yn yr iaith Gymraeg, pan oedd y rheiny yn brin iawn; ac i’w briod alluog Meinwen y mae’r clod am hynny.

Buasai rhestru holl gynnyrch Ben Rees yn llenwi mwy o ofod nag a ganiateir i’r gyfres hon o erthyglau ar awduron. Dros y blynyddoedd mae wedi bod yn olygydd nifer o lyfrau a chylchgronnau gan gynnwys Yr Angor, ac yn 2019 cyhoeddodd bigion o’r papur bro hwn i ddathlu 40 mlynedd ei fodolaeth.

Gellir dosbarthu cynnyrch yr awdur toreithiog hwn, yn Gymraeg a Saesneg, i nifer o gategorïau:

(i) Ei lyfrau ar hanes crefydd a chrefyddwyr yn ogystal â’i lyfrau o weddïau a darlleniadau sydd yn gymorth mawr i’r lleyg wrth baratoi gwasanaethau. Nid oes lle i restru ei holl lyfrau ar y pwnc hwn ond bydd dau ohonynt o ddiddordeb arbennig i Gymry Lerpwl: Liverpool Welsh and their religion / Cymry Lerpwl a'u crefydd a ysgrifennodd ar y cyd â Merfyn Jones a Llestri Gras a Gobaith: Cymry a’r Cenhadon yn India, gyda llun ar y clawr o’r diweddar Dr Arthur Hughes a’i briod hynaws, Mrs Nancy Hughes, dau a gyfrannodd gymaint i eglwys Bethel Heathfield Road ar ôl dychwelyd o’r maes cenhadol.

(ii) Ei lyfrau yn ymwneud â heddwch a heddychwyr megis ei lyfr ar Mahatma Gandhi: Pensaer yr India, ac Oriel o Heddychwyr Mawr y Byd. Cafodd y fraint o ddarlithio ar Henry Richard yn nhŷ’r Arglwyddi yn San Steffan ac wedyn cofnododd y cynnwys mewn llyfr Saesneg The Life and Work of Henry Richard. Ysgrifennodd hefyd ar yr heddychwr Samuel Roberts, Llanbrynmair ar gyfer y gyfres Writers of Wales.

(iii) Ei lyfrau am ddiwylliant Cymraeg a Chymreig. Mae ei gyfrol Wales: The Cultural Heritage yn taflu golwg ar y wasg Gymreig, y traddodiad eisteddfodol a’r diwylliant Cymreig. Mae wedi golygu llyfrau ar ddau dramodydd o Lerpwl: Saunders Lewis (yn Gymraeg) ac Alun Owen, (yn Saesneg); ac wedi ysgrifennu yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg ar hanes Gwilym Hiraethog, gweinidog yn Lerpwl, darlithydd, llenor a sylfaenydd papur newydd Cymraeg i wyntylltu problemau gwleidyddol a chymdeithasol ei gyfnod, gŵr heb fod yn anhebyg i Ben Rees ei hun.

(iv) Ei lyfrau am wleidyddion. Yn ogystal a chofiant Aneurin Beavn a grybwyllwyd uchod, cyhoeddodd: Cofiant Jim Griffiths, Arwr glew y Werin a Cofiant Cledwyn Hughes un o Arwyr Mawr Môn a Chynru. Mae’r ddwy gyfrol hyn yn gynhwysfawr iawn; gwelir ôl ymchwil fanwl i fywyd y tri gwleiydd hyn ac mae’n dadansoddi eu cyfraniad i wleidyddiaeth y wlad a’r byd ehangach drwy ddangos dylanwad eu magwriaeth ymneilltuol Gymreig ar eu meddylfryd.

Un llyfr y dylid ei grybwyll, na ellir ei osod yn yr un o’r categorïau uchod, yw ei hunangofiant. Os ydych am wybod mwy amdano, darllenwch hwnnw yn Gymraeg neu y fersiwn Saesneg ac mi gewch wledd.

Mae’n amhosibl wneud cyfiawnder ag awdur mor doriethiog mewn cyn lleied o eiriau Hyd yn oed yn well na darllen ei lyfrau yw ei glywed yn darlitho ar eu cynnwys. Mae ei huotledd fel lli’r afon ac ehangder ei ymchwil fel ymchwydd y môr.

Addition to the CV

Reverend Professor Dr D. Ben Rees has been heavily involved in scholarship in the last six years , since 2013, and in that year he produced a biography of the Christian Socialist Rt Hon James Griffiths, C H ( 1890-1975 ) who was one of the architects of the Welfare State in Britain. Then he worked on another influential lay preacher, son of the manse, and an international politician, namely Rt Hon Cledwyn Hughes, Companion of Honour, and his widely praised biography was published in 1217. These two volumes comprised over 800 pages, but Dr Rees, was invited to prepare two Chapters (100 pages) on the Witness of the Presbyterian Church of Wales to Society in Wales in the Twentieth Century for the official History of the denomination (Volume 4). In addition, he was able to produce two more studies on forgotten Christian missionaries who had been born and nurtured in the Calvinistic communities of the Liverpool Welsh. The first was an original study of Josiah Hughes of Liverpool who went into Malacca in the name of the London Missionary Society. Born in 1800 he died of malaria in 1840. The second volume was a thorough study of Reverend Dr H. Gordon Roberts. who was responsible for the Welsh Missionary Hospital, opened in 1922, in Shillong , North East India. Dr Rees is acclaimed as the one of the foremost missionary scholars in Britain., and his study of Dr Roberts will be translated into the Mizo language in the near future. Reverend Rees has been invited to give two lectures for the Northeast Wales Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Wales in the last two years. The first was delivered at Mold, Flintshire on a Poet – Soldier of the First World War namely Private Ellis Humphrey Evans but better known by his bardic name of Hedd Wyn . He died in the Pilkem Ridge battle on 31 July 1917 but won posthumously the National Eisteddfod of Wales highest accolade its bardic chair at Birkenhead in September 1917. Dr Rees arranged a Festival at Birkenhead on 7/8 2017 which attracted hundreds of people to commemorate the dead soldier’s brilliance. Then he edited a volume of the celebrations which was produced in 2018. and all the copies of the book have been sold. Then in 2018 he prepared a lecture on. The Christian denominations in Wales and the First World War delivered this time in Wrexham.

2018 proved to be a special year for Dr Rees as he was invited to deliver the most prestigious lecture of the National Library of Wales on 2 November at Aberystwyth on the Birth of the National Health Service and its creator Aneurin Bevan ( 1897-1960 ). He is the first Church historian in the history of the annual lecture to receive the honour. Then on 3 October at the Town Hall in Liverpool the Lord Mayor ( Councillor Christine Byrne ) bestowed on him for all his scholastic, social, religious, and cultural involvement as well as his ecumenical activities and his inter faith involvement in the history of the City.
